The World Wide What?
or
What Do You Mean, You Don't Own a Telephone!
|
When I was a young boy, one of my favorite things to do was visit my grandmother. One of the fascinations at my grandmother's house was her party line telephone which featured phone lines that were shared by several households. I had heard of these "dinosaurs." Imagine having to share a phone line with other people ! My immediate family had a private line. |

One day, after having called one of my friends from my grandmother's house, I told her it was funny to hear another conversation in the background and proudly told her that we had a "private line." She just smiled and gently told me that, believe it or not, there was a time when there were no telephones at all.

|
I had never thought of that and I was shocked. No telephones?! Surely, these peoples' lives were not complete without a telephone, something was missing! That was, of course, the overstatement of a young boy's mind who, like all children, assume that their world reflects the way the world has always been. But in some way, I was also calling into question the credibility of anyone who didn't own a telephone. And if, for example, I had had to call my favorite candy store but they didn't have a phone, I would have questioned even more the validity of a business with no phone.
|
| That day and its ponderings was relegated to the distant memories of childhood until many years later, not long ago, when I was talking to my nephew, who was about as old as I was when I talked to my grandmother about telephones. My nephew was having difficulty with the operation of a toy he had received as a birthday gift. Finally, in frustration, he suggested we go to the company's Web site to see if that would help us figure out the problem. To my surprise and my nephew's shock, this company did not have a Web site. My nephew was absolutely incredulous at this. And I gently told him that there was a time when nobody had a Web site, before the Internet was even invented. He was as shocked about this as I was on that day years ago when my grandmother told me the same thing about telephones. When my nephew declared that he would never buy another toy from that company who didn't even have a Web site, I just smiled. |
|
My point here is that my young nephew was questioning the credibility and validity (not to mention integrity!) of this company that didn't have a Web site. Regardless of how one might feel about it, we have entered an age in which a company or organization without a Web site loses some credibility. A well designed and easily navigable Web site on which a visitor can quickly find helpful and relevant information is now a mainstay of that credibility. Studies have shown that both business people and the general public who are looking for products, services, or information now go to the Internet almost as frequently as they pick up a phone! |
Do you own or are you part of a business or organization that doesn't have a Web site?
It's time you got one!
